Trestleboard NewsLetter, October 2012.

Paul S. Griffin, WM

Brethren, ,

September has come and gone and I am able to report that all seems well at Harmony Lodge! This letter to you will focus on upcoming events because there has been little activity this past month about which to report.

Over this past month, for the first time in quite awhile, there was no work required of us. This will be only a brief hiatus, however, as a Master Mason degree is scheduled for Thursday, October 4, beginning with supper at 6:30 PM and the gavel falling at 7:30 PM. Please come and join us as we raise some worthy men. If you have been unable to attend Lodge communications in the past, I encourage you to use this event to rejoin the fellow-ship at Harmony and enjoy once again the legend of the third degree.

At our upcoming Regular Communication on October 11, the Nominating Committee will make its report on a slate of officers for next year. Please contact a committee member with your input on the Lodge leadership for 2013. Committee members are: Kevin Ennis, PDDGM; David Spears, PM; Howard Harris, SW; and Christian Sherbert, JW. I know they would appreciate your viewpoints. Also, please note that next year’s officers will be chosen at the Regular Communication on November 8, and their installation will occur at the Regular Communi-cation on December 13.

With just a few months left in my term as the master of Harmony Lodge, plans are being made to select the officers for next year. I have appointed an officer nominating committee and encourage each of you to contact them to offer your input into next year’s leadership. The members of this committee are: RWB Kevin Ennis, PDDGM; WB David Spears, PM; Brother Howard Harris, SW and Brother Christian Sherbert, JW. The officers for 2013 will be elected at the regular communication in November with their installation occurring at the regular communication in December.

We are still receiving contributions to the HVAC Capital Campaign. To date, a total of $9905.00 has been contributed by forty-seven brothers! Though short of our goal, this is a significant accomplishment, and I am pleased with the effort so far. We appreciate all of you who have participated as well as those who are planning to do so!

To date, these Brothers have contributed to the HVAC fund. Their efforts are greatly appreciated!

Something for Everyone

Advertise your fraternal affiliation proudly! The Harmony Lodge jewelry cabinet is OPEN FOR BUSINESS. From bumper stickers to lapel pins and anything in-between, all you have to do is ask your Senior Warden. Cash, check or money order, they’re all good (no plastic – sorry). If you don’t see it, ask and it shall be rendered unto you via catalog order or a quick look in a box or under something else. We have Blue Lodge, Scottish Rite, York Rite and Eastern Star paraphernalia. Prices, unfortunately, reflect current inflationary trends.

Brethren,

Masonry is a secret society. What can be told and what cannot?

Masonry is not a “secret society” but a “society with secrets.” A secret society is one of which the member-ship, aims and ideals are unknown. There is no secret about who is, and who is not, a Freemason. Lodges publish their rosters. Many Grand Lodges publish the names of their members in annual Proceedings. The world at large knows that the aims and ideals of Freemasonry are religious, charitable, friendly, fraternal.

What is secret in Freemasonry is well phrased in the Ninth Landmark as adopted by the Grand Lodge of New Jersey:

“The legend of the third degree; the means of recognition; the methods of conferring degrees; the obligations of those degrees and the ballot of every brother are, and must continue to be, inviolably secret.” [One Hundred One Questions About Freemasonry, The Masonic Service Association, 2003]

“It was on September 18, 1793, that George Washington laid the cornerstone for the Capitol Building. The original building was much smaller than the one we know today, because members of Congress didn’t have offices; they worked at desks in the main chamber. The cornerstone was crafted by a silversmith named Caleb Bentley. Washington, who was a Freemason, was dressed in his ceremonial Masonic sash and apron as he laid the stone.

“Beaufort Chapter 133 Order of the Eastern Star has combined with Faith Chapter of Port Royal. Over the last few years, there has been less and less attendance at the meetings of each chapter; and with heavy hearts we decided it was in the best interest of both chapters to combine. One of the rules of combining chapters is that all assets of Beaufort Chapter should go to Faith Chapter which includes furnishings, badges and checking accounts. Beaufort Chapter has a CD and a checking account worth almost $3,300.00. We requested that $2,500.00 of this money be given back so that we could present it to Harmony Lodge No. 22 as a gift. Faith Chapter voted to give Harmony $3,000.00. This money can be used for any purpose, but we respectfully request that it be used to put in a handicapped bathroom and a ramp. One of the deciding factors of moving to Faith Chapter was the lack of steps and stairs. We hope this gift will enable all people to enjoy the fellowship at Harmony once again.

Brethren,

We have had a busy summer at the Lodge. We have had a clean-up day, several nights of degree work, and have been coaching our newest Entered Apprentices and Fellowcrafts. With fall already here, we are on the horizon of several upcoming events at the Lodge. I will be looking for volunteers for fellowship in the kitchen for the Thursday, October 4th Master Mason Degree and for the Saturday, November 3rd Inspirational Dinner. Both of these should have a good turnout and therefore hands are needed to prepare some good food. For those who can help with either event, please let me know by calling me on my mobile phone at 575-5667 or via email at Christian@islandrealty.info. I am always looking for choppers and place setters.

Fraternally,

Christian Sherbert

Junior Warden

Fraternal Greetings Brothers, ,

PLEASE TAKE NOTICE

Harmony Lodge # 22 AFM will Elect Officers for 2013 at the Regular Communication in November 2012 with Installation at the Regular Communication in December 2012 .

If you have not paid your dues for 2012 you have likely received a letter informing you of such. I respect-fully request that you make contact with me and either pay your dues or let me know about any hardship and we will look into assisting you with your dues payment. Please contact me prior to October 31, 2012. If you have not paid your dues by October 31, 2012, you will go “NPD.”

Earlier this year, I had the most unpleasant duty of informing a widow that her husband (a Past Master) was not eligible for Last Masonic Rites at his funeral because he had gone “NPD.” She was surprised and heart-broken because she knew his love for the fraternity and particularly Harmony Lodge # 22. Please don’t put your family in this situation.

After 20 consecutive years in the Officers’ Chairs at Harmony Lodge, I am vacating my current office of Secretary. It is time for new blood and my tired, old blood to step aside. I have enjoyed serving the Craft and am honored by your continued support and confidence in me. I will be in the background assisting the new Secretary for some time to come. I will teach and mentor him to the best of my ability. I plan to assist the new Secretary with his duties and continue to be an active member of Harmony Lodge. Thank you again for your mentoring, instruction, confidence and support throughout my tenure in the “chairs.”

I must thank Most Worshipful Brother Robert V. Pinkston, PGM for his patience and mentoring as I assumed the office of Secretary and for his guidance and wisdom when I was appointed District Deputy Grand Master. Worshipful Brother Johnny Harvey, PM, Treasurer, for always being at my side, as I learned the Master Mason proficiency and as I acted as Secretary.

I especially wish to thank Worshipful Brother Marty Martinez, PM who was my “coach” following my initia-tion. It was he who instilled in me the desire and passion I have for this great fraternity. Because of him I have been, and continue to be, desirous of more light. I hope that one day I will instill that same passion and desire in some young Entered Apprentice.

With Gratitude and Brotherly Love,

Fraternally,

Kevin V. Ennis, PDDGM

Secretary
