Harmony Masonic Lodge No.22 A.F.M. News Letter for month of October 2009

W/M David Scott Spears

Brethren,

Fraternal greetings from the East.

In August and September, we initiated the following brothers:  on August 27, Christian Everette Sherbert, Anthony Forest Howard and Harry Carroll Matthews III; on September 3, Birger Kristian Rasmussen II, Aaron Edward Fleming, Matthew Patrick Jordan, Homer Kelly Stewart Jr. and Richard Brian Bruce; and on September 24, Richard Aldan Clark.

On October 10, at 7:00 am, the cleanup for the Outdoor Degree is scheduled.  The Outdoor Degree will be held on October 17 on Gibbet Road in Pritchardville, a left turn just off route 170, the same place as last year.  Breakfast will be provided.  If you miss the turn-off and reach route 46, you can make a left turn and reach Gibbet Road off 46, also a left turn.  If you missed it last year, this a call for HELP for the Outdoor Degree.  Please be there.

Fraternally,

David Spears

Worshipful Master

Brethren,

It seems as if we are trying to cram in all the remaining important Masonic events before the end of the year!  As of October, we have 10 Entered Apprentices, who may be scheduled for their Fellowcraft Degrees this month.  We will decide this at our regular communication on October 8.

On October 6, our own Chapter 133 of the Eastern Star is having its formal inspection.  All are invited to eat at 6:30 pm, with the opening of ceremonies at 8:00 pm.

On October 10, at 7:00 am, is the cleanup for the Outdoor Degree, which will be held on October 17 on Gibbet Road in Pritchardville, the same place as last year and the year before, in fact every year.  The Masters and Wardens Club of Mt. Moriah Lodge is the organizer of this beautiful and unusual event.  Wives and children are, of course, invited to the picnic which follows the raising.

Also on the 10th at 2:00 pm, following the Outdoor Degree cleanup, Past Master Elbert “Jack” Jackson (843-681-8275) will have a party at his house on Hilton Head Island.  All Masons and their wives are invited.  Directions to Brother Jack’s house from the intersection of SC170 and SC278 are as follows:

Head east on route 278 toward Hilton Head Island; turn right onto Spanish Wells Road; turn left onto Marshland Road; turn right onto Namon Road; and arrive at 10 Gibson Drive.

On October 30 at 6:00 pm, Harmony Lodge is having its Halloween Costume Party.  Darlene Dopson is currently hoping to show up and decorate the lodge.  It would be a real blessing for you to show up and give her a hand!  There will be food and music.  My wife, Sandy, for some sadistic reason, is trying to get me to show up in a Scottish Kilt!  My mother’s maiden name was McKenzie and our ancestors came from Dundee, Scotland.  You need to come because you will certainly have fun.  If nothing else, just to see if a man can be pushed by his wife into wearing a skirt!  Well, we used to be “Kings of our Castle,” but the queens seem to have taken over for sure!

Fraternally,

Charlie Spears

Senior Warden

Brethren,

I have been giving some thought to the creation of a new column.  The decision was easy.  Following is a list of our honored brethren who have earned their sixty-year pins.  Share the pride and help us all to be aware of those brethren who have given much and shared much in their Masonic careers.

Congratulations

If I have omitted anyone in my editorial enthusiasm, please do not hesitate to inform me and I will correct my error in next month’s newsletter.  Thank you.

Editorial Economics Department

We are always looking for ways to save money.  Your Editor has been requesting your email addresses in every edition of the newsletter.  If enough of the brethren send me their email addresses, it is within the realm of possibility that I can send out this newsletter via email instead of bulk mail.  Bulk mail costs $.16 apiece, on average.  Each month, I mail out 231 copies at a cost of about $37.00, which adds up to $444.00 a year!  Email is free!  Therefore, even at $.44 for each non-bulk mailing, we would be breaking even if 84 newsletters were snail-mailed and the rest of you (147) received your newsletters electronically.

Now that’s a tall order, I admit.  At present, we are at the low end of the permissible bulk mail limit.  My goal is to email the newsletter to all of the brethren and send out none of the newsletters by post!  That would defer a very significant chunk of money to more worthy goals; perhaps even bring back the E. E. Morris Scholarship Fund.

Please give this issue some serious thought.  My email address is always published right after the birthday announcements, but in case you have forgotten, it’s howardharris@hargray.com.  I look forward to hearing from ALL of you or at least every one of you who owns a computer and uses email.

Coolers celebrate 60th anniversary

(Published Sunday, September 6, 2009 in the Beaufort Gazette)

Clayton and Frances Cooler celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary July 31.  They were married July 31, 1949 in Beaufort.  They have two children, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The couple were childhood sweethearts.  Clayton retired from the City of Beaufort as Director of Utilities after 44 years of service.  Frances is a homemaker.

They celebrated their anniversary on board the cruise ship, “Valor,” where they renewed their wedding vows on July 31, 2009, during a western Caribbean cruise.  Also joining them on their cruise were two daughters, Terry Walls and Debbie Parker, sons-in-law, Gerald Walls and Warren Parker, all of Beaufort and a brother, Raymond Cooler of Jeffersonville, Ind., grandchildren, great-grandchildren and several friends.
