Trestleboard NewsLetter, November 2012.

Brethren, ,

Where has the month of October gone? It seems that just yesterday the month was starting and Halloween was weeks away! Tempus fugit! Likewise, Harmony Lodge is moving along and the brethren are doing good work and enjoying great fellowship.

On October 4th, two worthy brothers were raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason. We congratulate Rayford Wallace Myers and Jonathan David Radu on attaining the highest degree in the Blue Lodge. We wel-come them and look forward to the positive contributions that they can make to our Lodge. Brothers Larry Morales, Steward and Aaron Stephens, JD are to be commended for their efforts in coaching them toward their proficiencies. Participating in the degree work were WB David Spears, PM as Senior Deacon; WB Henry Garbade, PM as the Lead Fellowcraft; and Aaron Stephens, JD as the Wayfaring Man. The three basemen were WB Laurence Laughlin, PJGD; WB Charlie Spears, PM and WB Sonny Gay, PGS. The working tools were presented by Christian Sherbert, JW and RWB Joe Giunta, PDDGM gave the lecture. The work was done quite well, and I appreciate all who participated.

Our Lodge will elect its officers for 2013 at the Regular Communication on November 8th; please plan to attend and help decide the leadership for the upcoming year. At the October Regular Communication the nominating committee offered the following slate of brothers for the elective positions: Howard Harris as Worshipful Master, Christian Sherbert as Senior Warden, Bill Nettles as Junior Warden, Johnny Harvey as Treasurer and myself as Secretary. If there are any other nominations, then they can be made from the floor. The officers-elect will be installed on December 13th at the Regular Communication.

The HVAC Capital Campaign has risen, to date, to $10,105.00! Though short of our goal, I am pleased with the effort and appreciate all of you who were able to participate. Thank you!

Finally, at the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918 in a railroad car in Compiegne, France, the guns of war went silent along the western front in Europe. An armistice had been signed which ended the Great War, which we now know as World War I. In the United States this Armistice Day would eventually evolve into the national holiday that we today celebrate as Veterans Day. So this November 11th, please remember our veterans, especially those who are Brother Masons with us in Harmony Lodge. These folks are deserving of our respect and gratitude, so please thank them for their service to our country!

By the square,

Paul S. Griffin

Worshipful Master

Something for Everyone

Advertise your fraternal affiliation proudly! The Harmony Lodge jewelry cabinet is OPEN FOR BUSINESS. From bumper stickers to lapel pins and anything in-between, all you have to do is ask your Senior Warden. Cash, check or money order, they’re all good (no plastic – sorry). If you don’t see it, ask and it shall be rendered unto you via catalog order or a quick look in a box or under something else. We have Blue Lodge, Scottish Rite, York Rite and Eastern Star paraphernalia. Prices, unfortunately, reflect current inflationary trends.

Brethren,

Why are candidates hoodwinked?

Blindfolding a candidate is symbolical of that state in which he has “long been in darkness and now prays for light.”

It is not to keep him from seeing the lodge room, or the officers, or the brethren, but to make a deep and last-ing impression on his mind, that Masonically, he has no, or but partial, light, and that only by the consummation of the ceremonies for which he has asked and which the lodge has granted, may he receive that Masonic light which will enable him to “travel in foreign countries and receive Master’s wages.”

That the conclusion of parts of Masonic degrees be accompanied by unexpected sight and sound is a very old and very effective way of making an event memorable. [One Hundred One Questions About Freemasonry, The Masonic Service Association, 2003]

Why do Masons wear aprons?

The use of the apron is extremely old, not, as with the operative Masons, as a protector of clothing and body against tools and stone, but as a badge of honor. It was so used by the priests of Israel, by candidates for the mysteries of Mithras in Persia, by the ancient Japanese in religious worship. Ethiopia knew aprons as did Egypt. In all times ad climes, it has been a badge of distinction. It is as such that a Mason wears it.

The material of the Masonic apron – lambskin – is a symbol of innocence, as the lamb has always been.

Color and material are important in its symbolism but Masonry admits the “symbol of the symbol” – as, for instance, an electric light in place of a candle. Hence a Mason has more than once been “properly clothed” when the lambskin aprons of the lodge were all in use and he came through the tiled door clad in a white handkerchief!

Brethren,

As 2012 is coming to an end, I look back over the year with fond memories of our work in Lodge, our newly made brothers and the fellowship shared at the Lodge. This has been a good year for Harmony 22 and I was glad to have been a part of it. We have a new slate of officers coming for 2013 and I am looking forward to working with them all.

With all good there can be some bad. It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that Brother Larry Morales will be leaving Beaufort for a new station in North Carolina and will also be deploying to Afghanistan as part of his next stop. Larry’s move was quick and unexpected. He is leaving Beaufort on Thursday, November 1st with his family in tow.

I have sincerely appreciated working with Larry and hate to see him and his family leave. But I do know wherever he is he will do good work and be an exemplary Mason to all of those around him. We wish you the best Larry and we all pray for your safety when harm comes your way. Thank you for doing what you do so we all may enjoy our families and loved ones at home.

Fraternally,

Christian Sherbert

Junior Warden

Fraternal Greetings Brothers, ,

We encourage every member to attend our Regular Communications. November’s Regular Communication will include the election of officers for the next ensuing Masonic year.

The Nominating Committee has offered the following suggestions for the officer candidates:
