Your frequent appearance at our regular meetings is earnestly solicited.

Howard R. Harris, WM

Brethren,

Due to my having contracted the flu, a variant of which seems to have been resistant to the vaccination I got in October of 2012, I was too sick to preside over the April meeting. Christian Sherbert, our dedicated Senior Warden, fulfilled these duties with his usual shining excellence and sat in the East on my behalf. Thank you, Brother Sherbert! My symptoms have gone almost completely and I will resume my place at our next regular communication.

The 276th Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of Ancient Freemasons of South Carolina was held at the Sheraton Myrtle Beach Hotel on April 25-26 and was its customary success. Our newly elected Junior Grand Warden is Right Worshipful Brother Mike Smith, SGIG of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite in South Carolina; and our newly appointed District Deputy Grand Master of District Four is Right Worshipful Brother Henry Garbade of American Lodge No. 98 in Ridgeland.

Something for Everone,

Advertise your fraternal affiliation proudly! The Harmony Lodge jewelry cabinet is OPEN FOR BUSINESS. From bumper stickers to lapel pins and anything in-between, all you have to do is ask your Senior Warden. Cash, check or money order, they’re all good (no plastic – sorry). If you don’t see it, ask and it shall be rendered unto you via catalog order or a quick look in the cabinet. We have Blue Lodge, Scottish Rite, York Rite and Eastern Star paraphernalia. Prices, unfortunately, reflect current inflationary trends. [Ed.]

Your Worshipful Master has just laid in a supply of bumper stickers which are proving very popular among the fraternity:Real Men Wear Aprons.” The stickers include an apron graphic overlaid with the Square, Compasses and G all in blue. These bumper stickers sell for $5.00 and support the Low Country Masters & Wardens Club Scholarship Fund. Please see me to purchase your bumper sticker. Thank you for your support!

If you have not been observing your birthday celebrated on our Happy Birthday list near the end of this newsletter, please call or send me an email and I will include you in that list. Just the month and day; I don’t need the year. [Ed.]

Fraternally,

Howard R. Harris

Worshipful Master

Brethren,

What is a Masonic Monitor?

The Monitor, or Manual, published by most Grand Lodges in some form, is usually a pocket-size volume which contains the exoteric or written work, as distinct from the esoteric, or secret or “mouth-to-ear” work or ritual. It is curious and interesting that what is exoteric in one Grand Lodge is sometimes esoteric in another, but no Monitor discloses any secrets to any reader. Monitors are of more use to officers and others who take parts in the exemplification of degrees than to lodge members who do not. Some Monitors also contain explanations of various parts of Freemasonry and a few are comprehensive in their coverage of the subject.

What is a Lewis?

In Pennsylvania and England, a Lewis is a symbol of strength. Universally, it represents the son of a Mason not yet twenty-one years of age; hence the derivation of “strength” since a man’s strength is in his son. George Washington was under age when initiated. In North Dakota and Arkansas, a Lewis may apply for membership, but he may not be initiated until he is twenty-one. England initiates a Lewis at eighteen by dispensation; Scotland does it without a dispensation.

What is the ceremony of “passing the chair?”

In some, not in all, Grand Lodges, it is necessary that a Master-elect be either an actual Past Master before his installation, or a virtual Past Master, by having received the Past Master’s degree in a Chapter of Royal Arch Masons.

To make a Master-elect an “Actual Past Mater” recourse is had to an emergent or occasional lodge, formed of Past Masters only, by dispensation of the Grand Master, which group performs the simple but highly symbolic ceremony of giving a Master-elect certain instructions and impressing certain facts upon him, designed to make his Mastership of his lodge more effective.

Why are a Past Master’s compasses, in his jewel, open at 60 degrees on a quadrant instead of on a square?”

The compasses open sixty degrees are in easy position to construct a square. The Master has worn the square while he presided; now, as Past Master, he is supposed to be in possession of the knowledge necessary to make a square, hence the position of the compasses and the quadrant. There are many geometric methods of erecting a square; the Past Master’s jewel hints at one of the simplest and most used methods as best for the Past Master to employ in instructing his successor.
