Harmony Masonic Lodge No.22 A.F.M. News Letter for month of March 2010

Charles Gary Spears WM

Brethren, ,

We performed a second degree on February 25. Right Worshipful Joe Giunta provided the lecture, a first class presentation. If you miss it, we will have another Fellowcraft Degree on March 4. This time Right Worshipful Terrell Altman will provide the lecture and again, what a pleasure it is to hear the lectures by these masters. Why two ceremonies for the same degree, you may ask? It is because we are lucky enough to have ten candidates ready and we cannot pass them all at once. We simply cannot accommodate them at the same time.

March 20 will be our first Oyster Roast at the lodge in a long time. $15 dollars will buy you all the oysters you can eat, along with chili and hotdogs. We will be selling tickets, so look for them at our lodge and from brothers of the lodge. March 25 we will conduct an Entered Apprentice Degree. Worshipful Jack Jackson will provide the lecture for us.

Within in the lodge, Brother Chance Van has made us new kneeling cushions to go around the altar. SW Craig Dopson attached the cushions and cloth. Miss Darleen has embroidered the compass and square on each one. They look really good.

Speaking of Ms Darleen, what a wonderful job she did of decorating the lodge with help from Ms Grace Laughlin and Ms Sandy Spears and thanks to Craig for cooking our Valentine’s Day Dinner. We had a great time and attendance was good, even with the first ground-sticking snow in 21 years. Due to Ms Darleen’s efforts, the lodge was able to give away three LeCreuset cooking pots as door prizes. These are very valuable pots, shaped like valentines and colored red. Thank you so much Ms Darleen and Brother Craig Dopson.

Looking further into the future, on Saturday April 17, American Lodge 98 located in Ridgeland, SC, will host a Lodge of Sorrow. Please help us get the word out to all Masonic Widows, so they can attend. There is no cost and the event is put on by the Masters and Wardens Club. It starts at high noon. We are also holding a Mother’s Day dinner at Harmony 22 on May 7 at 6:30 pm. Please attend our functions. If you need help getting to the lodge, call me at 843 522 3502. I will try to get you the help you need to attend.

Charles Spears

Worshipful Master

February proved to be a busy month with lots of business at our Regular Communication and multiple candidates at Special communications. Currently we have ten men traveling through their degree work and at least three petitions anticipated coming in at the March Regular Communication. It appears we are going to be busy with degree work again this year.

The Finance Committee is busy developing long-range and contingency plans for the urgent needs of the lodge along with developing a budgeting process for the lodge to use on an annual basis. This formal process is new for our lodge; however, we feel it necessary, with more monies passing through the Secretary’s and Treasurer’s hands. The Secretary and Treasurer welcome the change and look forward to its implementation.

The lodge depends on your dues to operate and prompt payment makes it easier for the lodge to pay regular bills and contribute to worthwhile causes whenever they arise. Every year we contribute to MSA, to the Perpetual Life Membership of Harmony Members and Friends in memory of passed members and immediate family members, along with other various expenses.

As of December 31, 2009, we have 174 current members with 58 of those being 40-Year Life Members and approximately 50 Perpetual Life Members. Approximately 100 of our members pay annual dues, providing the lodge about half of our typical annual budget of around $12,000 to $13,000 dollars. In recent years, our budget has greatly exceeded these numbers and we have depleted much of our reserve funds with our 250th Anniversary Celebration, renovation and maintenance of the Hermitage Road Property, etc.

Good news is on the horizon! We believe we have a buyer for the Hermitage Road Property, thanks to the unwavering efforts of our own Henry Chambers, PM. I hope to report in the next month or so that we will have closed on the sale of the property and our financial situation will have improved as a direct result of that sale. We need to be prudent with the use of these funds and we are relying on the Finance Committee to direct us.

It is an honor and privilege to serve as your Secretary and I thank you for that.

Respectfully and Fraternally,

Kevin V. Ennis, PDDGM
