Brethren,

Well, we’re back from our vacation in the Shenandoah Valley. For the past 30 years, Joan and I have owned a time-share at Massanutten Mountain Ski Resort in McGaheesville, Virginia. Massanutten Mountain lies between the mountains of West Virginia and the Blue Ridge in one of the most beautiful parts of the United States there is. Farmland abounds with Black Angus and Holstein in every direction. Rockingham County is the Turkey Capital of the world, I am told and there are many such turkey ranches all over. Chicken ranches, too, but I did find any.

As I say, we go up there every year during the last week in June and have been doing so since 1980. We like to visit the many antique malls and restaurants and drive all over the valley sightseeing. This summer, the rains have been plentiful and “the corn is as high as an elephant’s eye.” Green is the predominating color.

For history buffs, the Shenandoah Valley is rich in Civil War lore, many battles having been fought at just about every turn of the many back-country roads.

I am in debt to my worthy Senior Warden, Christian Sherbert, for taking charge in my absence. According to his report (see below), the degree work performed on the 20th went smoothly under his presidency.

Fraternally,

Howard R. Harris

Worshipful Master

Brethren,

What is a “Recognized Grand Lodge?

The 49 Grand Lodges of the United States have different conceptions of “regularity.” Thus the Grand Lodge in State A will “recognize” – that is, accept as equal, regular, legitimate Freemasonry – the Grand Lodge of Foreign Country X, while the Grand Lodge of State B is not satisfied that the Grand Lodge of Foreign Country X conforms to all the requirements of the Grand Lodge of State B. Thus a Grand Lodge of a foreign country may be legitimate Masonry to the Grand Lodge of one State, and “clandestine” or “irregular” or “unrecognized” by another State. The Masonic Service Association publishes every July a chart showing what Grand Lodges outside the United States are “recognize” by each of the 49 Grand Lodges of the nation.

Am I allowed to visit in any lodge anywhere on the globe?

No. You have agreed to obey the laws of your own Grand Lodge. Those laws provide that you can visit in the lodges which are under the jurisdiction of Grand Lodges which your Grand Lodge recognizes as legitimate. All United States Grand Lodges are in fraternal relations with each other. If your travels extend beyond this nation, and you wish to visit lodges in foreign countries, ascertain, either from your Proceedings (published yearly by all Grand Lodges), by correspondence with your Grand Secretary, or by consulting the Chart referred to in the Question above, which foreign Grand Lodges your own Grand Lodge recognizes.

Brethren,

Summer 2013 is fully upon us. For those of us who performed work in Summer 2012, you can appreciate the fact that we now have air conditioning. Thank you Past Master Paul Griffin for attending to this quickly and efficiently. An Entered Apprentice degree was performed Thursday, June 20th with diligent efforts by our regular participants and some new faces alike:

PDDGM Chuck Weickhardt substituted in the West; Past Master Henry Chambers in the South; Past Master Clayton Cooler as Treasurer; Past Master Scott Robertson as Chaplin; Past Master Howell Youmans as Senior Deacon; Brother Martin Thomas as Junior Deacon and Working Tools presentation; Brother Jim Outlaw as Steward; Past Grand Steward Sonny Gay gave the Apron Lecture; PDDGM Joe Giunta gave the Entered Apprentice Lecture; Past Junior Grand Deacon Lawrence Laughlin performed the writing ceremony; and, of course, our newly made brothers William George Ballard, Jr. and Cody Ryan Leake.

All the participants performed well and what a pleasure to see Brother Lawrence Laughlin back in Lodge showing us all a thing or two as to how it’s supposed to be done.

I appreciate the opportunity to perform the work in The Lodge that Worshipful Master Howard Harris afforded me in his absence. It was a pleasure working with you all and I look forward to more opportunities in the future.

Fraternally,

Christian E. Sherbert

Senior Warden
