Harmony Masonic Lodge No.22 A.F.M. News Letter for month of July 2010

Charles Gary Spears WM

Brethren, ,

This month has been very busy with work. We currently have six new Fellow Crafts and two new Entered Apprentices. This means that we held our Regular Communication, two Fellow Craft Degrees and an Entered Apprentice Degree during June.

Our Entered Apprentice Degree was also an official visit from the District Deputy Grand Master, Right Worshipful Grayson Mayfield. RWB Mayfield was most gracious, which proves him to be up-to-date on all work. He did mention what good officers we have in our Secretary and Treasurer. This is based on their record-keeping for our Lodge. Brother RW Kevin Ennis and WB John Harvey, Sirs, we salute you and say thank you for your expertise and loyalty to our Lodge. And thanks to all of our other officers for their work in our Lodge.

Brother Junior Warden, Paul Griffin, was the presiding Master for the work part of the Entered Apprentice Degree. Brother Paul did this with grace and dignity. RWB Mayfield remarked on our degree work having dignity within the Lodge out of respect for the candidates. Our pro-tem Tiler, Brother Matt Jordan, looked good in his new suit.

In July, we will start with our regular communication on 8 July, followed by a Third Degree on 10 July, Saturday, at 8:00 am, with a breakfast of shrimp and grits, followed by the degree work. We expect four to five candidates. Come one come all. 17 July will find us enjoying a “Summer Bash” at Harmony Lodge, designed by Darleen Dopson as a Family Fun Day, starting at noon. Please call Sandy Spears at 522-3502 or Mrs. Darleen Dopson at 838-3281 for body count on food by 12 July 2010. Our Lodge will host a Second Degree put on by the Masters & Wardens Club of the Fourth Masonic District on 22 July, 6:30 pm to eat, 7:30 pm to open Lodge and start the degree work. This should be a great time to catch up with long-time friends and see work done as a composite Lodge.

Fraternally,

Charles Spears

Worshipful Master

Brethren, ,

The following email message was received on June 19 from Theodore John (Ted) Garbera, who was initiated, passed and raised in Harmony Lodge and who many of us may remember as one big Marine who was a perfect example of an enthusiastic Mason:

Brother, things here have been crazy. Claire is Pregnant! She’s about 10 weeks along now. I told her I wanted to wait until the baby was born to find out the sex, but things are happening pretty quickly!

I have about a month left at the Police Academy. We just shot on the pistol range, and I shot three perfect scores in a row, so now I get a plaque on graduation day. After that, I start working at my Department (Darien, CT) where I will have about three months of Field Training Officer time. I ride around with another officer to learn the ropes and how things work.

We are throwing a Fourth of July party here at the house. It’s going to be both a housewarming and Fourth of July celebration. I will be roasting my first whole pig, so we’ll see how this works out. The new house is coming along great; we purchased in Norwalk, CT. It’s about 10 minutes north of Stamford (my hometown) on I-95. It’s in a great neighborhood and the neighbors are real friendly. And best of all, the guy across the street is a retired Norwalk Cop, so he and I have a lot to talk about. The best part about the house is the previous owners built an addition off the garage that was a studio for the father. I think he was a photographer, but I have turned it into my own personal rec room. My old boss gave me a really great old slate pool table and I have a bar in there. I put all my Marine Corps stuff on the walls and everyone who sees it is impressed. It’s a great spot to hang out with the boys.

Other than that, the yard was pretty neglected over the years, so I’m playing catch up on that to make it ship-shape for the party. I contacted one of the lodges up here, but I haven’t decided which one I want to get involved with, Darien or Norwalk. They know a South Carolina Mason is in the area and are excited to meet me.

I’m going to graduate the academy before I get my fingers in any other pots, though. Give my best to all the brothers at the Lodge. I miss Harmony a lot, and I will try to make a trip down there to visit you guys as soon as I get some free time!

Keep in touch, Ted

An educational offering from WB Moe Morgan: original source is WM W. Vickers, The Canadian Craftsman, June, 1898.

“The cable tow is thus a symbol for the cord or bond of love, which should unite the whole fraternity. Its length or the length of your cable tow is the sacrifice you are willing to make on behalf of your brethren. It is in your heart, not to be measured by miles. It is not gauged by distances, but by the deed. It should correspond to immensity of the monitorial Lodge, and to do so should span the earth, touching wherever there is sorrow or distress. This is only a small part. I hope to have this available on our website in full. Please look for it, as you read our By Laws at www.AFM22.org.”
