My first month as Master of Harmony Lodge No. 22 has come and gone. In one month was accomplished one regular communication, one Third Degree ceremony, when four Fellow Crafts were raised to Master Masons, an officer training class in Hardeeville for all lodge officers and a half-day of training for myself as Worshipful Master of the Lodge.
Now, if it just gets a little faster, perhaps I can meet myself coming in one door as I go out the other! How did I do on the two lodge functions? Well, I did okay, but there is room for improvement. Our newly elected officers have also shown improvement in their new positions.
Our candidates were very well trained. Thanks to SW Paul Griffin, SD Howard Harris and Brother Mark Campbell. Our new Master Masons are, Andy Howard, Aaron Fleming, Trey Matthews and Christian Sherbert. Andy has been maintaining our yard work since early Fall and making it look better than I was able to do in less than half the time; and rightly so, as owner of Back Yard Retreats Landscaping. Thanks Andy. And congratu-lations to our four new Master Masons: excellent men, as they should be.
On February 12 at 6:30, our lodge will be host a Valentine’s Day Dinner. Please bring the lady of your life and have fun. Do please call Craig or Darleen Dopson by February 5 for a head count so they can purchase the correct amount of food. This is short notice to you and is my fault for not getting this out to you sooner. So, please call as soon as you can. The Dopsons’ phones are: 843-838-3281 and 843-812-7977 (cell).
If all goes well, on February 25 we will conduct Fellow Craft Degree work with the possibility of passing five candidates! Please join us for this promising event. In addition, on March 25, we will be initiating a number of new candidates as Entered Apprentices.
At this time, we are planning a fundraiser Oyster Roast. More information will become available as plans evolve.
I attended the Instructional Meeting for newly elected lodge officers on January 16 in Hardeeville along with many of our other Brother Officers. January 14 was our regular meeting. Then on the 28th, we raised four new Brothers. January has truly been a busy month for our Lodge.
February has just started and my calendar is already filling up. As we continue to do degree work, the new officers for this year need your support and help. We have Second Degree ceremonies coming up on the 25th. I hope everyone can arrange their schedules to attend and support your new Officers and our newly made Brothers.
The second Annual Valentine Dinner will be on Friday, February 12 at 6:30. Please plan to attend and bring your family. Call Craig Dopson no later than February 8 at (843) 812-7977 so we may know how many people to prepare a great dinner for.
Congratulations to our newly elected and appointed officers and best wishes for a successful year in your respective chairs. The Annual Report has been submitted with the following statistics of interest. Our current total membership is 174, an increase of seven from 2008. We raised six, affiliated six and reinstated one. Six of our Brothers passed this transitory life. We put on 28 degrees in 2009. Currently we have 15 candidates travel-ing. We have 50 Perpetual Life Memberships, 28 Past Masters in good standing and 50 Life Members on our roll.
The six Brothers who passed this transitory life were Virgil Lawrence Davis, John Randall Hall, Rudolph Robert Cooper, Sr., Edward Marion Lubkin, Boris Hirsch and James Herbert Leach.
Grand Lodge per capita in 2010 is $19.25; thus the increase in our dues to $65.25 for 2010. We have approx-imately 110 dues paying members. Please submit your dues in a timely manner, as this is what pays the bills of the lodge.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your Secretary.
Respectfully and Fraternally,
Kevin V. Ennis, PDDGM
Wit & Wisdom
By the time a man realizes that maybe his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he’s wrong.
-- Poet Charles Wadsworth.
Any intelligent fool can make things bigger and more complex. It takes a touch of genius and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction.

The January newsletter was not sent out to the majority of the brethren because of prohibitive copying costs. To be precise, the newsletter mailing list consists of 268 addresses, of which 70 brethren receive their newsletter by email and 198 by snail mail. Bulk mail postage for a minimum of 200 pieces costs $31.00. Copying these newsletters costs a minimum of $68.00 (200 x 6 pages in black and white), totaling $99.00.
In the past, it was possible to generate a full-color newsletter without cost, due to the enormous generosity of our Past Master Henry Chambers, who volunteered the use of his office printer at Beaufort Realty. Since the breakdown of this printer and the unpredictable nature of its eventual repair, it is not certain when the newsletter will be again available in color and at no cost. It is therefore necessary to cut back. For the foreseeable future, the snail-mail version of the newsletter will appear in black and white, while emailed versions will appear in color: just one more motivation to activate your computer savvy and send me your email address, if you have not already done so (firstname.lastname@example.org).
I would like to mention here that I have had the privilege of coaching two excellent brothers, Andy Howard and Trey Matthews, each to his degree as Master Mason. I am also coaching three other brothers, Martin Thomas, Richard Bruce and Matthew Jordan to their degree as Fellow Craft Masons. This otherwise arduous task has been made intensely enjoyable and I have been rewarded by seeing my students’ abilities grow and evolve in skill and knowledge. I like to explain and interpret the passages to them as we move along; and this can only assist them in understanding the awkward and arcane style of speech that is contained in our Red Book.
I invite my brothers to take an active part in the coaching and education of our new candidates. If you are interested in coaching, please let me know. Brothers Henry Chambers, Laurence Laughlin and I are on the Education Committee and your contributions are most welcome and sought after. Call me (843-524-0981) or send me an email.
